Umbwe Route

6 days. Physically challenging, most direct but very steep route.

bookThis route is considered the most challenging route on the mountain. It offers a short, steep and direct climb and is difficult and not recommended for hikers with little or no experience. Strong hikers who are confident of their ability to acclimatize can attempt this route. This route is least used and has a low success rate. You will sleep in tents, carried and set up by staff.

  • Day 1: Arusha > Umbwe Gate > Umbwe Cave (2940 m)

After breakfast, briefing from the mountain guide. Then pack everything and drive to Umbwe gate. After registration start hiking to Machame huts through rain forest. There's a high possibility that it will actually rain in the rain forest. We recommend to use good boots and rain gear, as well as good protection for your equipment. Dinner and overnight stay at Machame Huts where the staff will set up our camp.

Shortly after leaving the camp after breakfast, the forest ends and the path continues along a narrow, spectacular ridge. As you come closer to Barranco Valley, the path flattens and then descends slightly to Barranco Camp.

The Barranco Camp is without a doubt the most spectacular campsite of this route, with fantastic views of Kibo, the Western Breach and the first of the southern glaciers.

After lunch you have enough time to prepare your equipment for the summit (check your camera batteries and headlight, we recommend to carry your water in a thermal flask to avoid freezing). Sleep early after dinner to rest as much as possible in order to get up at midnight for summit.

    Hiking time: 4-5 hours
