Mount Kilimanjaro

This highest mountain in Africa is just three degrees below the Equator.

Kilimanjaro derives its name from the chagga word meaning "our mountain". It was mispelled by Europeans: instead of saying kilimakyaro they said kilimanjaro.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and one of the largest volcanoes ever to burst through the earth's crust.
The outstanding features are its three major volcanic centres: Shira in the west (4269 meters), Mawezi in the east (5280 meters) and the snow-capped Kibo in the middle (5895 meters), the most recent and dormant volcano.
The mountain can be climbed by any normal fit person with the assistance of experienced guides and porters. Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time of the year, except during the long rains in April and May.
